How do I meet the requirements?
-
Dear International Students,
Florida State University is committed to ensuring that all students have access to comprehensive, affordable healthcare during their time at the university. As part of this commitment and in alignment with Board of Governors Regulation 6.009 requirements, an important update has been made to the Student Health Insurance requirement for international students.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, all international students will be required to purchase the FSU Student Health Insurance Plan.
Waivers will no longer be granted for the Student Health Insurance requirement, except in very limited circumstances outlined below. What This Means for You
If you hold an active F-1, J-1, F-2, or J-2 immigration status, you will be:
- Automatically enrolled in the FSU Student Health Insurance Plan
- Not eligible to waive this requirement
-
Limited Exceptions
The only exceptions to this requirement are:
- Non-degree or transient students
Students in F‑1, J‑1, F‑2, or J‑2 status who are enrolled in non-degree or transient academic programs may request a waiver if they have a short-term, limited-duration insurance plan that meets BOG Regulation 6.009, even if it is not ACA-compliant. - State Department-sponsored J-1 students
Students in J‑1 status who are enrolled in an insurance plan provided by the U.S. Department of State may request a waiver, provided the plan meets BOG Regulation 6.009. -
Why This Change Is Being Made
This update ensures that all international students are enrolled in insurance coverage that:
- Meets both federal and state requirements
- Provides consistent access to routine and emergency medical care
- Eliminates gaps in coverage that can occur through self-reported waiver submissions
-
Next Steps
- You do not need to take action to enroll—eligible students will be automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan.
