There is a difference between the requirement to show proof of health insurance in order to be able to register for classes at Florida State University and using health insurance to pay for care rendered at Thagard Student Health Center.
A. Requirement to show proof
- Graduate and undergraduate students enrolling full-time must show proof of health insurance before they can register for classes.
- To qualify as comparable insurance, coverage for the following is required.
- Coverage for the entire academic year including holiday breaks
- Mental health coverage
- Prescription drug coverage
- Provider network in Tallahassee for specialty, diagnostic, emergency and hospital care
- Major medical coverage of at least $100,000 per year
- For female students, maternity coverage (exemption waiver available).
- Maternity coverage is the only requirement that may be exempted. The exemption form, available from the health compliance office, must be notarized and submitted before the insurance waiver will be complete.
- BCBSFl has health insurance available for purchase through FSU if your insurance does not satisfy the requirements listed above.
- Proof of health insurance must be renewed once each academic year.
B. Using health insurance to pay
- Students, post doctoral fellows, visiting scholars and their qualified dependents (13 and older) may always be seen at Thagard Student Health Center regardless of their insurance carrier.
- Present your insurance card and FSU ID every time you have an appointment at the health center.
- If lab work is ordered, the student is responsible to know whether the in-house lab, Quest Labs, accepts the student’s insurance.
- If any radiology procedure is ordered, the student is responsible to know whether Thagard Student Health Center is in or out of network. The student may request radiology to schedule any radiology procedure with a provider who accepts the student’s insurance.
- At the end of your visit, any charges will be filed with your insurance carrier for reimbursement. No initial out-of-pocket payment is required.
- A medical account debit card may be used to pay for services at the health center on the date of service.
- If Thagard Student Health Center is an in-network provider for your insurance, the claim will be filed as in-network.
- If Thagard Student Health Center is not an in-network provider for your insurance, the claim will be filed as out-of-network.
- Charges remaining following receipt of reimbursement will be balance-billed to the student account at Student Financial Services.
- Any charges put on the student account at Student Financial Services (SFS) may NOT be paid using a medical account debit card. The SFS system will reject any attempt to make a payment with a medical account debit card.
C. Uninsured students
- Grandfathered students (those enrolled before Fall 2007 who are not subject to the mandatory health insurance requirement) and other registered students who do not have health insurance may always be seen at the health center. There will be charges for any ancillary services rendered (lab, radiology, procedures or supplies used in diagnosis and treatment).
- Payment is due on the day service is rendered.
- Payment at Thagard Student Health Center may be cash or credit card.
- Charges may be deferred to the student account at SFS.
